Caring with Outdoor Education

Some outdoor education placements in Canada also give Lattitude volunteers the opportunity to learn and develop in a caring role. These roles share the duties of a trained Outdoor Activities Instructor primarily catering for groups of children and young adults who have special needs. These placements also offer volunteers the chance to take on extra caring duties.

Volunteers working in this type of environment will be trained to bring an extra level of care and supervision to their jobs and adapt the pace of activities to the varying needs of guests. You will learn about how to help with personal care such as feeding and dressing, and to look after guest’s emotional well-being.

There is ample opportunity to get involved with the many aspects of camp life and gain from a busy and fulfilling, well rounded experience.

Ecuador

Caring with Teaching

Ecuador offers volunteers the chance to volunteer on more than one project. Usually these caring projects are done in conjunction with either Teaching and (or) English Teaching

The caring elements available in Ecuador depend upon the placement undertaken as well as the location. Some placements will be located within a school environment that caters for vulnerable and disabled children. In this instance volunteer’s duties will include both aspects of Teaching and helping students with their studies alongside more generic caring duties such as supporting various therapies working to help stimulate the children’s senses, this will include assistance in their swimming lessons or horse riding therapy.

It is very common in Ecuador for volunteers to be involved with two separate placements. Alongside a teaching project for example volunteers may also be involved with a centre for young children who may be vulnerable, such as those who come from families who may be very poor or not looked after as they should.

These placements offer meaningful and challenging opportunities to engage and involve young children who live in environments without sensory stimulation. You will be required to think creatively, use music, stories and games to stimulate learning and development. Personal satisfaction and fulfillment will be achieved as well as improvement in speaking and understanding Spanish.
