Lattitude Global Volunteering’s reputation and credibility in the field of overseas volunteering and youth development is based on more than 40 years’ experience. Our partner organisations across the world have worked with Lattitude for many years supporting and hosting our volunteers abroad to ensure that they add value and capacity to local communities and contribute in a positive and sustainable way. Our experienced staff provide thorough and holistic support to young people from initial application to departure from the UK.
An Experience as Unique as You Are
Our volunteering placements are varied in their location, duration and experience. With a variety of departures available across the year and 3-12 month opportunities available across Europe, Latin America, Canada, Australasia and the South Pacific, you can be sure that there is an volunteering placement overseas that is just right for you. Our thorough matching and selection process ensures that your placement is appropriate to your skills, qualities and attributes and needs.
Personalised Service
From the initial application to Lattitude, you will be assigned a personal Volunteer Coordinator who will be responsible for dealing with you until your pre-departure briefing a few weeks before you leave the UK. This ensures that you have a consistent service and personal link with one person who will support you throughout the preparation for your trip.
We take each application on its own merit and ensure that every applicant is interviewed by an experienced member of staff or by a trained external interviewer. Once accepted on to a Lattitude Programme, you will be interviewed again by the Country Manager of the country you will be volunteering in. The interviews enable us to find out about you as a person, to identify your skills, qualities and attributes and for you to ask us as many questions as you want to help us match you to a placement that suits your particular strengths and needs.
Safety
We take your safety and security very seriously. Throughout the pre-departure briefing and the in-country Orientation when you arrive overseas, we make sure that every volunteer has been fully prepared and has the information required to keep safe.
We are able to advise on equipment to take, inoculations required, places to visit/avoid, cultural sensitivity and how to avoid hazardous situations. Every placement is vetted by Lattitude Country Managers who carry out regular risk assessments. Many of our host organisations have had long standing relationships with Lattitude and have successfully hosted Lattitude volunteers for many years.
Lattitude Global Volunteering has strong links with Embassies and High Commissions around the world and is kept informed of various political, social and weather fluctuations in each of our host countries. Through our in-country support we are therefore able to act on local situations quickly and efficiently in the best interest of our volunteers.
Our network of experienced Country Managers and Local Representatives based in-country and a 24 hours emergency telephone service means that assistance is always quickly available when required.
Support Before You Leave
Experienced Lattitude Global Volunteering staff are always on hand to provide friendly advice and support whenever you need it. When you apply to Lattitude, you will be assigned a dedicated Volunteer Coordinator based in our UK Head Quarters who will guide you through organising and planning for your experience.
You will be invited to a comprehensive Pre-Departure Briefing Day about 6 weeks before you depart where you will have the opportunity to meet fellow volunteers, talk to your Country Manager and hear from returned volunteers. We will also fully prepare you regarding health and safety advice, cultural sensitivities and travel tips.
As Lattitude is not a Travel Agency we do not get involved with travel arrangements. However, there is a dedicated team at STA Travel who can assist with all your travel queries and arrangements regarding flights. Lattitude encourages volunteers to take a group flight where possible so that you travel with other volunteers who will be volunteering in the same country. STA will also be able to help with further travel plans after your volunteering experience should you decide to continue travelling before returning home.
Support Upon Arrival
You will be met upon arrival by the Lattitude Global Volunteering Country Manager or Local Representative and taken to an in-country orientation. The orientation will prepare you for your experience, enable you to meet other volunteers and make friends, learn about your new environment and culture and prepare you for your placement locally.
Support at Your Placement
At your placement, you will be appointed a dedicated Mentor who will provide guidance and help whilst you are at your placement. To ensure that you have settled in well, your Country Manager will be in touch shortly after your arrival and will be an additional point of contact throughout your placement for matters that cannot be resolved by your Mentor or Host.
Your dedicated Volunteer Coordinator in the UK Office will also be on hand at any stage to answer questions you or your family may have.
In the event of an emergency, our 24 hour emergency telephone service is staffed by an experienced team.
Placements That Assist Others
Volunteers become a real part of the communities in which they live and are given the privilege of experiencing a new culture from within, whilst doing valuable work that enriches the lives of others. Our Country Managers work hard to find placements where volunteers are needed and do make a real difference locally and where you will be able to safely integrate into a welcoming, supportive community.
Access to the Worldwide Lattitude Global Volunteering Network
The Lattitude Global Volunteering network encompasses decades of Returned Volunteers, hundreds of Supporters and over 1000 fellow volunteers internationally every year – an instant directory of friends and mentors to call upon along your journey. We keep in touch through regular newsletters, Facebook, Twitter and alumni events and we understand how much your placements mean to you and always seek to keep you involved and up to date.
Value for Money
Our charitable objects ensure that the proceeds from volunteer fees support the cost of our services to develop and support young people through volunteering, combining quality, safety, and value for money. Once you have paid for your placement, there is no need to take large amounts of additional money to spend whilst volunteering. All placements include food, accommodation and in some cases, a small weekly allowance/pocket money.
Find out more about the costs involved on our ‘A Look at the Costs’ and ‘What are the Costs’ pages.
The Lattitude Global Volunteering Bursary Scheme
We want volunteering overseas to be as accessible to as many people as possible and thanks to the generous donations we receive from Charitable Trusts and Foundations, we are able to grant bursary awards to those individuals who can demonstrate that they are in financial hardship.
Bursaries are available to certain individuals who wish to volunteer on Lattitude’s programmes based in developing countries and awards can range from several hundred pounds to the full Lattitude placement cost depending on circumstances.
