Have an interview

Once we have received your completed application form we will invite you to attend an interview. This is your chance to tell us a little more about yourself and the kind of volunteering experience you’re after. We use the interview process to learn more about you and ensure that we find you a placement that best matches your skills and experience with the specific needs of our hosts in-country. Face to face interviews are held in Reading, Leeds and Glasgow, but if you cannot get to those cities we are happy to interview you by telephone or Skype.

You’re in!

You will be assigned a dedicated Volunteer Coordinator from our Reading office who will contact you to confirm if you have been accepted as a volunteer. Your Volunteer Coordinator will be your key contact and support you throughout your journey.

Where and what

Once you have paid your deposit the matching process begins. The process of matching every volunteer to the right placement can take a little time as, in many cases, we are also recruiting volunteers in Australia, New Zealand and Canada as well as the UK, and they all apply at different times. You should expect to be contacted by the Country Manager of the programme for which you have been recommended for within a couple of weeks and they will discuss your placement options in more depth with you. They will provide you with further information about the placements available in that country, the work involved at each and provide you with an opportunity to ask any additional questions.

Prepare

Throughout the pre-departure process your Volunteer Coordinator will continue to provide assistance and prepare you for your placement. You will receive further information on how to prepare for your placement, be invited to attend a pre-departure briefing and be given details for your placment. The details will include a role description, host contact details and email addresses of previous volunteers who can tell you exactly what it’s like to volunteer in your country. The dedicated Lattitude Global Volunteering Team at STA Travel will assist with your flights, travel insurance and any other travel requirements you may have.

Pre-Departure Briefing

A couple of months before your departure, you and your parents will be invited to attend a briefing day in Reading. This is a great chance to meet fellow volunteers heading to a number of countries, to interact with returned volunteers, to meet our staff, to ask any final questions and to reassure your parents! Following the briefings, many volunteers attend a teaching skills course in London which further allows you to get to know your fellow volunteers.

You’re away!

Goodbyes have been said and you’re off! On arrival you will meet your in-country Local Representative who, along with your host mentor, will support you throughout your placement. Your Volunteer Coordinator in Reading will also be able to answer any queries that may arise and remain in contact with you. And, of course, our 24-hour emergency phone line is available at any stage for you or your family if required. To make the most of your experience use your initiative, challenge yourself and immerse yourself within your new community. You will receive more in return than you could ever imagine.
