Volunteer Q & A's

When deciding to go on a volunteering placment in a foreign country, you're bound to have loads of questions.  Here are the answers to a few of the common ones.  If you want to have a chat about anything in more detail, then feel free to get in touch.

Am I eligible to apply?

If you are aged between 17 and 25 and are motivated to volunteer, then the simple answer is yes!  For a small number of placements you must be over 18, but have a chat with us if you want to find out more.  We’re looking for enthusiastic, outgoing people with a good level of English.

Where does your money come from?

Lattitude Global Volunteering is a registered charity, which means we are supported by a wide range of trusts, individuals and companies.  We are also helped by a large team of volunteer staff, which helps keep the costs down!

How much does it cost?
This varies depending on the location and duration of your placement.  For more information, see our How Much Will It Cost? pages.

Is help available if I really can't afford it?
Yes!  At Lattitude, we have a dedicated team to help you with fundraising for your placement.  We also have a number of bursary schemes available for those who could not otherwise afford to go.  Take a look at our “Funded Places” pages for more details.

Where does my Lattitude fee go?

This is a very common question.  In a nutshell, the fee covers everything to do with your placement.  This includes the cost of arranging it, your pre-departure briefing and the international support network while you’re away – including a 24-hour emergency phone service.

Do I need to organise my own flight?

No.  This is something else Lattitude takes care of for you, so all volunteers can travel out together.  Bear in mind, this will be your biggest variable cost when calculating the total for the placement.

Can I go with a friend?

It is very difficult to place volunteers in pairs or groups, so we advise that friends do not apply for a gap year  together.

How long will I be away?
Most of our placements last between 3 and 6 months, although longer ones are available.  Many volunteers also choose to stay on and spend time travelling after their placement comes to an end.

Will I be supported while I'm away?

Of course!  At Lattitude, we send an average of 1,000 volunteers from the UK to 27 countries every year, and we organise for 600 volunteers from other countries to come to the UK.  So we know what we’re doing.  While away, you’ll be in touch with a representative in the country, as well as access to our international, 24-hour emergency phone line.

When should I apply?

We advise people to get online and apply nice and early, as some of the placements are particularly popular and fill up very quickly.  We occasionally have some late availability places, so you could also apply for a placement if your plans change at the last minute!
