Schools Assistant

Our Australia gap year schools program is based throughout the country. Each schools comes with its own challenges, atmosphere and experience.

Lattitude has two Australian gap years Schools Assistant programs, one lasting 6 months and the other 11 months. Your duties might include, helping in the boarding house, assisting teachers, helping with sports coaching, music, art or drama. You may help with fieldtrips and the school’s outdoor education program.

A boarding school is a 24/7 experience and it is more like a small community than somewhere to work. It will give you the opportunity to use all your talents and really get involved.

Indigenous schools

Our Australian gap year indigenous schools program is based in northern Australia and lasts for 6 months. You will be teaching in English which may be the childrens’ third or even fourth language.

You will be helping new students transition from their isolated communities to life in a busy boarding school and unknown city.

The students mainly come from cattle stations, mining communities and Islander communities. You will get the chance to see a rarely seen side of Australia and perhaps even get the chance to visit these remote communities.

Outdoor Education

Spend your gap year in Australia working with children and adults in the majesty of the Australian countryside.

You will spend your Australia gap year supporting instructors with hiking, canoeing, rafting, abseiling or mountain biking as well as helping the camp with its admin and cleaning. Each volunteer will be expected to have some outdoor skills, but will have the chance to expand their skills and even gain an Australian qualification.

This part of our Australia gap year program is based in Victoria and New South Wales and you will spend either 6 or 11 months be living the Outback Life to the full.

Conservation Program

Volunteer on your gap year in Australia protecting Australia’s precious environment.

Our volunteers spend five months in Australia and rotating around three different locations. Each location presents the volunteer with a different environmental challenge. The program consists of tree planting, cutting scrub, monitoring wild life and replacing lost vegetation. Whilst this can be hard work it is truly rewarding to know that you spent your gap year in Australia preserving its famous wilderness.

My outdoor adventures
“We start with a big breakfast, as working outside all day makes you hungry! We are told the work will be vigorous but with breaks. We make our lunch in the morning and pack it into an ‘esky’ – Aussie for a cool box. We’re briefed about the project at Stockton Beach. Then pile into the ‘troopy’, or 4 wheel drive vehicle, to spend a day (working) at the beach – it sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?”

A fantastic experience
“My best experience was on camp with the school. I learnt that I can easily adapt to a new environment and that I am now very independent. My gap year in Australia was the best thing I’ve ever done!”
